Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has officially called time on his international career, drawing the curtain on a decade of committed service to Nigeria.
The 31-year-old made the announcement in an emotional statement on his X handle, describing his years with the national team as an unforgettable journey filled with “duty, pride, and honour.”
Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 caps and appeared in five major tournaments, said he was leaving “with peace,” adding that he had poured everything into representing the country since his debut in 2015, a moment made possible by a pivotal call from the late coach Stephen Keshi.
The defender played major roles at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
His standout performance at AFCON 2023, where he scored in the final and won Player of the Tournament, remains one of the highlights of his national career.
In his farewell message, Troost-Ekong thanked fans, teammates and coaches who supported him, noting that the Super Eagles jersey “is only borrowed” and must now be passed to the next generation of players.
He stressed that although he is stepping away from the national team, it is “not a final goodbye,” promising to continue supporting Nigerian football and contributing to communities across the country.
Troost-Ekong departs as one of the most respected defenders of his era and a key figure in the Super Eagles’ resurgence over the last decade.
Who Leads Next? Three Top Contenders Emerge for Super Eagles Captaincy
With Troost-Ekong’s exit, the Super Eagles face an important leadership decision as Coach Eric Chelle prepares to name a new captain.
Wilfred Ndidi:
The vice-captain is the leading favourite. With 71 caps and years of consistency, the Besiktas midfielder is admired for his calm leadership and experience.
Alex Iwobi:
With 91 caps, the Fulham star is one of the most senior members of the squad. His versatility and long-standing commitment to the national team make him a strong option.
Victor Osimhen:
Nigeria’s top striker represents the new generation of leaders. With 31 goals, just six short of Rashidi Yekini’s all-time record. Osimhen’s influence and star power place him firmly in contention despite being younger.
As Nigeria prepares for a new phase, the announcement of the next Super Eagles captain is expected to shape the team’s direction and identity in the years ahead.
