Hope for Millions: Disability Rights Take Center Stage as Agencies Partner

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing disability inclusion in Nigeria, declaring that the absence of perfect data must never delay decisive action for persons living with disabilities.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu stressed the need for proactive implementation of accessible infrastructure, including inclusive building designs, dedicated parking spaces, and user-friendly public amenities, in line with existing laws.

Issa-Onilu called for a clear shift from charity-based approaches to empowerment-driven policies, insisting that persons with disabilities (PWDs) must be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to assert their rights.

He warned against tokenism and urged the removal of systemic barriers that hinder full political and social participation.

Responding, NCPWD Executive Secretary Ayuba Burki Gufwan commended NOA’s support and reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to strengthen collaboration to ensure full implementation of the Discrimination Against People with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

He outlined major challenges confronting PWDs, including unreliable population data, underfunding, weak enforcement of accessibility standards, and limited employment opportunities.

Both organisations agreed to establish a joint committee to deepen nationwide sensitisation, strengthen enforcement of the Disability Act, and drive systemic reforms aimed at building a more inclusive, equitable society for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities.
