The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has taken a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s airspace control system with the signing of contracts for a new corporate headquarters and a central Air Traffic Management Centre in Abuja.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, NAMA’s Managing Director, Ahmed Umar Farouk, said the project marks a historic shift in airspace operations, as it will bring air traffic control activities currently handled separately in Lagos and Kano under one national centre.
He explained that from the new facility, air traffic across the entire Nigerian airspace will be coordinated, boosting efficiency, strengthening safety oversight, and aligning Nigeria more closely with global aviation standards.
In a statement by the Director, public affairs and Consumer Protection, NAMA, Dr. Abdullahi Musa, Mr. Farouk stressed that the project is critical to the safety of the nation’s skies and warned that there would be no compromise on quality, as management will closely monitor construction.
He also thanked the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for securing Federal Executive Council approval, and praised NAMA staff for ensuring due process.
Earlier, the agency’s Legal Director, Rita Egbadon, described the contract signing as a landmark moment that ends years of operating from facilities that no longer reflected the national importance of NAMA’s mandate.
