BENIN CITY — The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has performed the annual Ewere traditional rite, offering prayers for progress, peace and breakthroughs for the people of Edo State and Nigerians as a whole.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the ancient ceremony is observed to give thanks to the Almighty for achievements recorded in the outgoing year and to seek divine blessings for a more prosperous new year.
During the rite, the Oba prayed to the Creator of the universe and invoked his royal ancestors for wisdom, protection and guidance for his people.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the colourful event featured chants, prayers and eulogies, as sacred symbols were ceremonially kindled, drawing large crowds of dignitaries, cultural groups and members of the public.
The monarch received homage and sacred Ewere leaves from his subjects, who in turn expressed appreciation for his leadership and spiritual role.
The Oba also reciprocated by extending blessings to visiting dignitaries at the event.
NAN further reports that activities marking the festival will continue on December 26, with the re-enactment of the traditional wrestling contest at the Oba’s palace.
The celebration will climax on December 28 with a special Igue thanksgiving service to be led by the Oba at the Holy Aruosa Cathedral Church in Benin City.
