Sad Day for Journalism as AMJON Loses David Adekunle

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran journalist, David Gbemisola Adekunle, who passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Describing the loss as shocking and heartbreaking, AMJON President, Mrs. Vera Osokpo, said the news of Adekunle’s death left members of the association devastated.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our dear colleague. His passing is a painful loss to AMJON, the maritime media community, and the journalism profession at large,” Osokpo said.

She called on AMJON members, maritime stakeholders, and media practitioners to stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and offer support during this difficult time.

According to the family, a Service of Songs will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at No. 5 Lawal Close, Abule Taylor, U-Turn Bus Stop, Abule Egba, Lagos.

The burial ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lantoro Cemetery, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Until his death, Adekunle—fondly known as “Honourable”—was a staff member of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and an active, committed member of AMJON.

He is survived by his wife and children.

His colleagues remember him as a dedicated professional whose passion for journalism and warm human spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
