Sanwo-Olu, Olu of Warri Task Young Creatives on Power of Storytelling for Nation-Building

Young influencers, photographers, digital content creators and creative enthusiasts on Tuesday converged on the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, Iganmu, Lagos, for the Storytellers’ Conference, an event aimed at harnessing the power of storytelling to shape Nigeria’s future and drive positive social change.

The conference, which brought together youths from across the creative ecosystem, focused on how storytelling can be used as a tool for cultural preservation, civic engagement, innovation and national development.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the event, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said storytelling plays a critical role in amplifying voices and creating opportunities for people with unique experiences and perspectives. He noted that narratives, when properly harnessed, can inspire change, build communities and influence policy and development.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also shared his vision for Lagos State, stating that in the next ten years, he foresees the state emerging as the best city to live and work in Africa — inclusive, functional and filled with opportunities for all residents. According to him, Lagos will continue to position itself as a hub where creativity, innovation and enterprise can thrive.

“Storytelling activates voices. It gives people the opportunity to be seen, heard and valued, regardless of background,” the governor said, urging young creatives to use their platforms responsibly and for the greater good of society.

In his keynote address titled “Culture, Heritage and the Storyteller’s Responsibility,” the Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, described storytelling as one of the most powerful forces in the world. Quoting late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the monarch said storytellers shape destiny and influence how societies think, act and evolve.

The Olu of Warri stressed that storytellers carry a responsibility to preserve culture, project truth and inspire progress, noting that narratives have the power to unite people, challenge injustice and redefine national identity.

He encouraged young Nigerians to embrace their cultural heritage while telling authentic stories that reflect the realities, aspirations and values of the society.

The Storytellers’ Conference was designed to empower youths with unique stories, equipping them to use their creative skills for development, impact and social transformation. Organisers said the event aligns with broader efforts to position Nigeria’s creative industry as a catalyst for economic growth and cultural diplomacy.

Participants at the conference described the gathering as inspiring, noting that it provided a platform for learning, networking and engaging with leaders across government, traditional institutions and the creative sector.
