Eyes on Third Mainland Bridge as FG Unveils CCTV

The Federal Government has taken a major step towards safer travel in Lagos with the inauguration of a high-tech CCTV monitoring centre on the Third Mainland Bridge—the first of its kind on any bridge in Nigeria.

The state-of-the-art facility provides round-the-clock, real-time surveillance of both the bridge surface and the surrounding waters, allowing for faster detection of incidents and quicker emergency response.

The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

According to Mr. Umahi, the initiative underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening security and safety on federal roads and critical infrastructure nationwide.

He noted that the monitoring system will help curb speeding, traffic violations, and security threats on the busy bridge, which serves as a vital link between Lagos mainland and the island.

To enhance enforcement and rapid response, patrol vehicles and a dedicated surveillance boat have also been deployed.

The minister described the project as the first phase of a broader plan, with additional components to be completed in due course.

Mr. Umahi added that the Third Mainland Bridge facility is expected to serve as a template for similar CCTV monitoring centres on major highways across the country.

Earlier, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Olufemi Dare, explained that the project would significantly reduce response time to accidents and other emergencies on the bridge.

The high-tech CCTV centre is largely powered by solar energy and supported by inverters, batteries, a transformer, and a standby generator—ensuring uninterrupted operation and reinforcing the government’s push for smart, sustainable infrastructure.
