NTDA, FAAN Move to Restore Tourism Desks at Airports

The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have reaffirmed their commitment to restoring dedicated tourism information desks at major airports nationwide, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s tourism appeal.

The renewed resolve followed a strategic meeting in Lagos between the Director-General of NTDA, Dr. Olayiwola Awakan, and FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, held at FAAN’s headquarters.

During the engagement, Dr. Awakan underscored the critical role airports play in shaping visitors’ first impressions of Nigeria, describing them as the primary gateway to the country’s tourism experience.

“Tourism is about movement, and FAAN is central to that process because airports are the first point of contact for anyone entering Nigeria,” he said.

He highlighted Nigeria’s vast tourism potential, spanning cultural heritage, historical landmarks, eco-tourism, and adventure destinations, but stressed the need for improved storytelling, reliable tourism data, and enhanced travel experiences to attract more local and international visitors.

A major outcome of the discussion was Dr. Awakan’s call for the reintroduction of tourism information desks at airports.

According to him, the desks would provide arriving passengers with essential resources, including visitor guides, maps, information on tourist attractions, and local transportation options.

In her response, Mrs. Kuku described aviation and tourism as intrinsically linked, noting that FAAN is fully prepared to collaborate with NTDA to enhance passenger experience and drive tourism growth.

She commended Dr. Awakan for his longstanding partnership with FAAN and reiterated the Authority’s support for initiatives that promote both domestic and international travel.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both agencies agreed to establish a joint committee to coordinate data sharing and oversee collaborative projects aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure nationwide.

The planned restoration of tourism information desks is expected to provide a warmer welcome for visitors and effectively showcase Nigeria’s cultural and natural attractions from the point of arrival.
