Expert Urges Transparent Procurement, Outcome-Focused Budgets to Boost National Development

Government at all levels has been urged to prioritise transparency in procurement processes as a critical step toward achieving optimal budget performance and sustainable national development.

A United States–based supply and manufacturing expert, Mr. Ayo Lawanson, made the call while speaking on This Morning, the breakfast programme on Radio One, 103.5fm in Lagos.

According to Lawanson, poor execution and weak implementation remain the major obstacles to effective budget performance in Nigeria.

He stressed the need for clear execution strategies that deliver visible outcomes, noting that credibility in governance is built on results, not promises.

He added that citizens should focus more on tangible outcomes rather than the volume of funds reportedly spent, while also encouraging the regular tracking of budgetary allocations through government digital platforms to enhance accountability.

Lawanson explained that while support for vulnerable groups is important, sustainable development depends largely on the provision of basic infrastructure.

He identified stable power supply, accessible and affordable healthcare, and good road networks as foundations for improved social welfare.

On the growing trend of “Japa syndrome” among Nigerian youths, the expert advised young people to leverage their talents in the global space without severing ties with Nigeria.

He noted that seeking better opportunities is natural but cautioned that migration should not replace long-term commitment to nation-building, urging youths to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.

As a way forward, Lawanson recommended increased investment in rural infrastructure, improved social welfare for vulnerable populations, prudent management of public funds, and stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to drive measurable results.
