The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its crackdown on indiscriminate waste disposal, seizing several waste carts and arresting a suspect during an early-morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island.

The operation followed targeted surveillance of unauthorised waste dumping activities in the area and was aimed at preventing the re-emergence of illegal dump points in locations already cleared by the Authority.
In a statement signed by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, the Authority disclosed that enforcement officers intercepted the waste carts at dawn in the Isale-Eko axis during a coordinated operation to disrupt unregulated waste movement.
The statement further revealed that an individual, identified as Muritala Suleiman, a 42-year-old male from Zamfara State, was apprehended at about 1:31 a.m. while illegally dumping refuse at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island.
LAWMA noted that early-hour monitoring remains a critical enforcement strategy, as many illegal dumping activities are often carried out under the cover of darkness when visibility is low.
Commenting on the operation, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said sustained enforcement efforts were necessary to deter offenders and protect stabilised locations from renewed abuse.
According to him, Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives have been strategically deployed across the state to eliminate persistent black spots and ensure long-term environmental sustainability along major corridors.
Dr. Gbadegesin reiterated the Authority’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment and urged residents to comply with approved waste disposal channels.
LAWMA also called on members of the public to support its efforts by reporting illegal dumping activities and embracing responsible waste management practices to keep public spaces clean and safe.
