The leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to closing Nigeria’s widening digital skills gap following an inspection visit to the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Oshodi, Lagos.
The high-level delegation, led by the Chairman of the NCC Board, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, alongside the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aminu Maida, visited the institute on Friday, January 30, 2026, to assess DBI’s capacity to support the Federal Government’s digital literacy and technical empowerment agenda.
During the visit, board members toured key laboratories, classrooms, and training facilities at the Lagos campus, evaluating the institute’s readiness to deliver skills aligned with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G networks, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Speaking during the inspection, Chief Olorunnimbe described DBI as a strategic asset within the NCC’s long-term development framework.
He stressed the need for the institute to remain at the forefront of technical and vocational training to ensure Nigerian youths are well-positioned to compete in the global digital economy.
Other members of the delegation included Princess Oforitsenere Emiko, Engr. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede, and Hon. Chris Okorie, underscoring the breadth of legislative and technical oversight guiding the Commission’s training initiatives.
The Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Ms. Rimini Makama, emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between DBI and industry stakeholders.
She noted that the Lagos campus’s location within Nigeria’s commercial hub presents a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academic training and real-world industry demands.
In his remarks, Dr. Maida reiterated the Commission’s focus on “Impactful Connectivity,” noting that while infrastructure development remains essential, it must be matched with a digitally skilled workforce to drive sustainable economic growth.
Guiding the delegation, the Head of the DBI Lagos Campus, Mr. Akin Ogunlade, expressed appreciation for the board’s continued support and reaffirmed DBI’s commitment to maintaining its status as a center of excellence for telecommunications and ICT training in West Africa.
The visit concluded with a strategic session where the NCC Board deliberated on future investments to upgrade infrastructure and expand training capacity to meet the growing demand for specialized digital certifications.
