NRC Alleges Destruction of Rail Assets by Oyo LG Chairman

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised alarm over the alleged destruction and removal of railway fixed assets worth several millions of naira along its right-of-way in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to the Corporation, the incident occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the Mile One-Ten axis, and was allegedly led by the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government Council, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda.

In a report issued by the NRC, the Council Chairman was accused of leading a group comprising suspected thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of Amotekun to vandalise and cart away railway assets within the corridor.

The report further claimed that the Council Chairman stated he was acting on the instructions of the Oyo State Governor.

During the operation, NRC assets reportedly destroyed and removed include rail tracks, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, as well as fences belonging to NRC tenants located within the railway corridor.

The Corporation stressed that the affected area is a clearly defined and statutorily protected railway right-of-way, adding that the actions constitute a serious violation of federal railway property.

NRC further disclosed that efforts by its Police Command to prevent the destruction were allegedly resisted, forcing officers to withdraw from the scene.

Describing the incident as a grave violation of federal assets, the Corporation said it is comprehensively documenting the matter and will pursue appropriate security, administrative, and legal actions to protect its infrastructure and prevent future encroachment and vandalism on railway right-of-way nationwide.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, appealed to the Oyo State Governor to urgently call the Ibadan South-West Local Government Chairman to order in order to avert a breakdown of law and order and continued infringement on the fundamental rights of railway workers.

Dr. Opeifa also reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to maintaining law and order despite what he described as provocation.
