The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Olubunmi Kuku, has directed an end to all cash transactions across the agency’s operations as the Federal Government intensifies enforcement of its nationwide cashless revenue policy.
In a circular to FAAN departments and airport business operators, Mrs. Kuku announced that all financial and commercial transactions within the authority must be conducted strictly through approved electronic payment channels, in line with a directive ratified by the Federal Executive Council.
The policy, scheduled to take effect from February 28, 2026, is designed to strengthen transparency, accountability and operational efficiency across Nigeria’s airport system.
The FAAN directive aligns with a broader warning issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, which condemned the continued collection of physical cash by Ministries, Departments and Agencies as a violation of established financial regulations.
The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr. Shamseldeen Ogunjimi noted that persistent breaches of electronic payment and revenue collection policies weaken federal financial controls and undermine transparency.
Government directives now require all MDAs to process revenue collections exclusively through designated electronic platforms, prohibiting the acceptance of cash payments in both local and foreign currencies.
Agencies have also been instructed to immediately educate staff, contractors and service users on the policy while displaying public notices at revenue points to reinforce compliance.
To ensure smooth transition, MDAs still handling cash have been given a 45-day window to deploy functional electronic payment systems, including point-of-sale terminals.
Authorities warned that accounting officers will be held personally liable for violations traced to their agencies, signalling tougher enforcement measures as the government deepens reforms aimed at strengthening public revenue management and promoting a fully cashless government transaction framework.
