ISWD 2026: NASoW Lagos Urges Unity, Collective Action to Tackle Social Divisions

As the world commemorates Social Work Month and International Social Work Day (ISWD) 2026, the Chairperson of the National Association of Social Workers (NASoW), Lagos Chapter, Modupeola Sahid-Adebambo, has called on social workers and stakeholders to embrace unity and collective responsibility in addressing societal challenges.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” she emphasized the urgent need for collaboration in tackling the growing divisions within families, workplaces, and communities.

According to her, many societies today are facing increasing challenges, including family conflicts, ethnic and religious tensions, political polarization, workplace discrimination, and the rising vulnerability of individuals and families. These issues, she noted, continue to weaken social harmony and the overall fabric of society.
She reiterated that social workers play a vital role in promoting dialogue, inclusion, understanding, and social justice. “Our profession is built on the belief that through empathy and shared responsibility, we can rebuild trust, restore dignity, and strengthen our communities,” she stated.

Highlighting the significance of the African concept Harambee, meaning “pulling together,” she stressed that sustainable solutions to social challenges can only be achieved through collective efforts involving individuals, families, community leaders, organizations, and government institutions.
She further noted that ongoing media engagements and public awareness campaigns have helped to showcase the impact of social work in Lagos State, while also addressing pressing social issues. Additionally, planned school outreach programmes aim to engage young people, instill positive values, and encourage responsible citizenship.

The NASoW Lagos Chairperson urged all members and stakeholders to remain committed to fostering hope, harmony, and social cohesion. She emphasized that overcoming societal challenges requires a united approach and a shared commitment to the wellbeing of all.
“As we celebrate International Social Work Day 2026, let us remember that by pulling together, we can build a more compassionate, inclusive, and united society,” she concluded.

Happy International Social Work Day 2026.
