Air Traffic Services Resume at MMIA as NAMA Activates Mobile Control Tower

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, has restored critical air traffic operations at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, following the recent fire incident that disrupted communication systems at the old terminal.

During an inspection of the facility, NAMA’s Director of Safety Electronics and Engineering Services, Mrs. Terese Ihenacho, confirmed that a Mobile Control Tower has now been fully deployed, tested, and is ready for immediate use.

She described the move as a major operational milestone, underscoring the agency’s resilience and commitment to maintaining safe and efficient air navigation at Nigeria’s busiest airport.

According to her, the tower has been reconfigured with local innovations to suit Nigeria’s operational environment, including improved connectivity and a blend of digital and manual systems to enhance efficiency and safety.

She added that plans are already in place to deploy a second mobile tower to support Runway 18 Right, in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Mrs. Ihenacho noted that the deployment is part of NAMA’s broader contingency strategy to ensure uninterrupted service during emergencies or infrastructure upgrades.

She also revealed that additional support systems, including solar-powered lighting, reinforced structures, backup power, and CCTV surveillance, have been put in place.

The NAMA director praised NAMA personnel for their dedication, describing them as heroes who worked under challenging conditions to stabilize operations and ensure the continued safety of Nigeria’s airspace.
