FG Adopts Proactive Measures to Strengthen Humanitarian Law, Tackle Insecurity

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the implementation of international humanitarian law as part of efforts to address insecurity and protect human rights across Nigeria.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made this known in Abuja while declaring open the 2026 High-Level International Humanitarian Law Dialogue.

He explained that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is adopting both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to tackle conflicts and enhance national security.

According to him, the government is also strengthening legal frameworks, improving military training, and enhancing protection systems for vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons.

The Vice President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international cooperation and the universal application of humanitarian law, while commending development partners such as the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross for their continued support.

Earlier, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said efforts are underway to domesticate international humanitarian law treaties and reform the justice system to align with global standards.

Also speaking, the Solicitor General of the Federation, Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law within Nigeria’s security framework.

The high-level dialogue attracted participation from key international organisations and stakeholders focused on strengthening humanitarian response and legal protections in conflict situations.
