The Lagos State Government has unveiled a solar power plant for Radio Lagos and Eko FM as part of efforts to promote renewable energy and ensure uninterrupted broadcasting.
Speaking at the unveiling of the facility on Tuesday in Agidingbi, Ikeja, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated that the initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to addressing the persistent energy challenges affecting public institutions.
He noted that the rising cost of diesel and the unreliability of public electricity supply have made the transition to alternative energy sources imperative.
According to Omotoso, the state is gradually shifting its public infrastructure, including street lighting, to solar energy in a bid to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye, described the project as a cost-saving and sustainable solution for powering broadcast operations.
He emphasised the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the solar facility.
Earlier, the General Manager of Radio Lagos/Eko FM, Jide Lawal, expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving the project.
He said the solar installation would significantly reduce energy costs, ensure an uninterrupted power supply, and enhance service delivery at the stations.
Lawal described the project as a major milestone, noting that it would enable the stations to operate efficiently around the clock while contributing to environmental sustainability.
In his remarks, the project contractor, Tayo Ogidan, disclosed that the solar power plant has a capacity of 150 kilowatts, sufficient to power the stations for their twenty-four-hour broadcasts using clean energy.
The initiative is expected to improve broadcast reliability while aligning with global efforts to adopt environmentally friendly energy solutions.
