Evacuated Students Flee Jos Violence As Farmers, Hearders Clash

The Cross River State Government has evacuated 37 of its students from the University of Jos following deadly violence in Plateau State that left many living in fear.

The move came after distress calls on April 1, 2026, describing killings and chaos around the campus, turning the area into what students called a “zone of anxiety and survival.”

Governor Bassey Otu swiftly ordered a rescue operation to ensure the safe return of all affected students.

Leading the mission, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Student Affairs, Joseph-Kelvin Enyam, said the directive was immediate and decisive, prioritising the safety of every Cross River indigene in Jos.

The rescue team, including student leaders, travelled overnight and arrived in Jos under tight security coordination.

With support from university authorities and Plateau State officials, armed escorts guided the students through tense and deserted streets to safety.

Meanwhile, tensions are also rising in Cross River communities, particularly in Odukpani Local Government Area, where farmers have accused Fulani herders of destroying crops worth millions of naira.

Residents say the situation has worsened since 2023, increasing fears of violent clashes if urgent action is not taken.

In response, the herders’ association has begun evacuating cattle from affected areas to prevent further conflict.

The phased movement, according to its leadership, aims to reduce damage to farmlands and maintain peace, as both sides seek to avoid escalation.
