Nigeria Emerges as Strategic Hub in Ethiopian Airlines’ Growth Plans

Ethiopian Airlines has praised the Nigerian government for its strong support over the decades as the carrier marks its 80th anniversary, highlighting more than 60 years of uninterrupted operations in the country.

Speaking at its 80th commemorative event in Lagos, the airline’s Nigeria Manager, Mrs. Firiehiwot Mekonnen, described Nigeria as one of its most important and enduring markets, noting that operations began in 1960, shortly after independence, and have continued without disruption.

She said Nigeria has played a central role in the airline’s growth, contributing significantly to passenger and cargo traffic while serving as a strategic gateway connecting West Africa to its global network.

According to her, the loyalty of Nigerian travellers and the backing of local partners have strengthened the airline’s resilience and expansion over the years.

Mrs. Mekonnen added that from its first flight in 1946, Ethiopian Airlines has grown into a major global carrier with a vast fleet and network, driven in part by sustained investment and partnerships in key markets like Nigeria.

She reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Nigeria, improving connectivity and service delivery, and positioning the country as a critical hub in its long-term growth plans.
