Two Jailed in Lagos for Illegal Waste Dumping

Two individuals in Lagos have been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment each for indiscriminate waste disposal, as authorities intensify enforcement of environmental laws.

The Managing Director/CEO of Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi.

The offenders, Kingsley Adieme and Rachel Onyekachi, were apprehended in the Igando area during a joint overnight sanitation operation by LAWMA’s Operation W.I.S.E. Enforcement Team and the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area Environmental Monitoring Unit.

They were subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, where they pleaded guilty and were each sentenced to three months in prison.

Gbadegesin said the conviction highlights the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental violations and reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained enforcement.

He urged residents to use only LAWMA-accredited Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and avoid illegal waste handlers.

He also encouraged the public to report environmental infractions through official LAWMA channels, including its WhatsApp line and social media platforms.

The agency reiterated that enforcement operations will continue across the state to improve environmental compliance and ensure a cleaner Lagos.
