Reduce Salt Intake to Avoid Serious Health Complications — Expert Warns

Nigerians have been cautioned against excessive salt consumption as part of efforts to prevent avoidable health conditions.

A nutritionist, Mr Dosu George, gave the warning while speaking on Issues in the News, a programme on Radio One 103.5 FM.

He explained that high salt intake could increase the risk of conditions such as Hypertension, fatigue, insomnia, and persistent headaches.

According to him, adopting natural alternatives can significantly reduce reliance on salt in daily meals.

He recommended ingredients such as garlic, ginger, cloves, mushrooms, fish, and crayfish, which can be dried and ground for cooking while still enhancing flavor.

Mr. George further advised Nigerians to prioritize home-cooked meals over fast food, noting that processed foods often contain excessive sodium.

He encouraged the consumption of healthier drinks like zobo and coconut water, alongside an increased intake of vegetables.

For proper hydration and detoxification, he recommended a daily intake of about two litres of water.

He added that drinks such as lime or lemon water, combined with natural spices like turmeric, may help the body manage excess salt levels.

The expert emphasized that small dietary changes can play a crucial role in improving overall health and preventing long-term complications.
