FG Approves New Conditions of Service for NSIB, Boosts Autonomy, Welfare

Nigeria’s accident investigation system is entering a new phase, following sweeping reforms that grant greater independence and improved welfare for investigators.

The Federal Government has approved new conditions of service for the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, now repositioned to report directly to the Presidency under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

The move is expected to strengthen the agency’s autonomy and enhance its role as the country’s sole multimodal accident investigation body.

According to a statement by the bureau, the Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., says the reforms mark a major shift toward global best practices, with a stronger focus on accountability, professionalism, and staff welfare.

A key highlight is the introduction of a performance management system to replace the old appraisal structure, linking staff performance directly to measurable targets, career growth, and rewards.

The Bureau is also addressing the mental strain of accident investigation, introducing trauma risk management and dedicated mental health breaks for personnel exposed to distressing field conditions.

Officials say the new framework will also boost training and international certification, aligning Nigeria’s investigators with global standards.

With these changes, authorities believe Nigeria is reinforcing safety oversight across aviation, marine, rail, and road transport, while sending a strong signal to investors about the country’s commitment to transparency and safety.

The government maintains that a more independent and professional investigation system will help prevent future accidents and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s transport sector.
