Lagos Hosts ICAN Aviation Inter-School Debate as Youth Engagement Drive Expands

The Aviation Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has marked its first anniversary with a forward-looking initiative aimed at inspiring young minds, hosting its maiden inter-school debate in Lagos as part of efforts to deepen professional awareness among students.

The contest, held at the Air Force Base Hall, brought together senior secondary students from Murtala Muhammed Airport Secondary School and Krystal-Ball Comprehensive College, who engaged in a lively debate on whether aviation contributes more to national development than other transport sectors.

The competition proved intense and closely contested.

In the end, Murtala Muhammed Airport Secondary School, arguing in favour of the motion, emerged winner with 245 points, narrowly defeating Krystal-Ball Comprehensive College, which scored 240 points, highlighting the high level of preparation and intellectual engagement displayed by both teams.

Organisers say the debate is part of a broader “Catch Them Young” initiative designed to introduce students early to career opportunities in accountancy and related sectors.

The Aviation Chapter, inaugurated in 2025, reflects a growing shift towards specialised professional groups aligned with key industries.

Beyond the competition, the debate spotlighted the strategic importance of aviation to Nigeria’s economy, with the Murtala Muhammed International Airport handling the bulk of international passenger traffic and serving as a critical gateway for trade, tourism and investment, even as other transport modes dominate in volume.

As part of its anniversary plans, the chapter is also setting up a N500 million endowment fund to sustain its programmes, with a long-term vision to expand initiatives like the school debate nationwide, positioning young Nigerians to better understand and contribute to the country’s aviation and financial sectors.
