Lagos Bans Goods, Heavy Luggage on Public Buses June 1

The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the movement of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses across the state, with enforcement set to begin on June 1, 2026.

The directive was disclosed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.

According to LAMATA, the decision followed increasing complaints from commuters and operational difficulties caused by the use of public buses for transporting goods and bulky items, a situation the agency said has negatively affected passenger comfort, safety, and efficient service delivery.

The authority explained that the resolution was reached after a strategic meeting with heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies, where stakeholders unanimously agreed that the practice must stop to create a more balanced and sustainable transport system.

LAMATA warned that enforcement of the directive would be strict, stating that any bus driver caught conveying goods or heavy luggage during the suspension period would face immediate dismissal and blacklisting.

The agency also said terminal officials, ground staff, or LAMATA personnel found aiding or permitting the loading of goods onto regulated buses would be summarily dismissed without exception.

The statement stressed that the state government maintains a zero-tolerance stance on non-compliance as part of efforts to restore order, safety, and efficiency within Lagos’ public transportation network.

Commuters, transport operators, and members of the public were advised to make alternative arrangements for moving goods ahead of the enforcement date.

LAMATA reiterated its commitment to providing Lagos residents with a safe, reliable, and commuter-focused transportation system
