NCAA Backs Down on Airline Service Ban Over Unpaid Charges

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has temporarily suspended its planned “no pay, no service” enforcement against airlines owing statutory charges, following consultations with industry stakeholders and concerns over the rising cost of Jet A1 fuel.

In a statement signed by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, the NCAA clarified that the suspension does not amount to a waiver or cancellation of debts owed by airlines, stressing that operators remain fully responsible for outstanding remittances.

The Authority noted that President Bola Tinubu had already approved a 30 percent discount on the debts as part of efforts to ease pressure on domestic carriers and stabilize the aviation sector.

The NCAA also defended the five percent Ticket and Cargo Sales Charge, explaining that the money is collected by airlines on behalf of the aviation system and must be remitted to support regulatory oversight and other critical aviation services.

According to the Authority, the temporary suspension is aimed at preventing disruption in airline operations while discussions continue on a structured repayment process that will ensure compliance and maintain stability in the industry.
