NCAA, Sabre Rally Nigerian Youths to Drive Future of Aviation Through Innovation

The future of Nigeria’s aviation industry took centre stage at the grand finale of the 15th National Travel Essay Competition and Air Transport Youth Empowerment Summit in Lagos, where industry leaders declared that the next phase of growth will be driven by innovation, technology and the talents of young Nigerians.

Held at the NCAA Annex of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the summit brought together students, regulators and aviation stakeholders under the theme: “Soaring Beyond Limits: Youth Innovation and Leadership in Aviation.”

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Sabre Central and West Africa, Dr. Gbenga Olowo, represented by Nurudeen Adeokin, said the future of aviation would be shaped not by infrastructure alone but by “young innovators and bold thinkers.”

He urged participants to prepare for an industry increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, automation and data-driven technologies.

The Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Chris Najomo, represented by Mrs. Carol Adekotujo, challenged aspiring pilots, engineers and air traffic controllers to embrace mentorship and practical training.

According to him, “soaring beyond limits” means overcoming barriers through ambition, resilience and innovation, while future aviation leaders must understand emerging technologies such as autonomous flight, electric aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels.

Also addressing the summit, the Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig General, Buba Marwa warned that drug abuse has no place in aviation.

Represented by Assistant Comptroller General, NDLEA, Mrs. Rita Geh, the agency stressed that “a drug-free lifestyle is not just a personal choice; it is a professional and safety imperative,” noting that aviation demands sound judgment and absolute precision.

The event also celebrated academic excellence as outstanding students emerged winners in the essay competition grand finale of the 15th National Travel Essay Competition, showcasing fresh ideas on aviation safety and security.

The competition challenged participants to examine the impact of social media on air transport safety and propose solutions to curb luggage-tag swapping linked to drug trafficking at Nigerian airports.

In the secondary school category, Oluwafemi Joshua Oluwaseyifunmi of Abesan Senior High School clinched the top prize, earning a cash award and a sponsored domestic flight ticket sponsored by Arik Air, while Patrick Chidiebere David and Eloyewan Naomi finished second and third place.

In the tertiary category, Odetayo Omolola Elizabeth of the University of Lagos emerged overall winner, receiving a cash prize and a sponsored return ticket to Johannesburg by South African Airways, Fellow University of Lagos student, Adebakin Temiloluwa Esther, came second, while Vincent Ikechukwu Maduka of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, secured third place.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Steadfast Spirit Award by former competition winner, Peace Akinsulire, who encouraged participants never to give up.

“Every time I tried again, I became stronger. Every time I didn’t win, I grew,” she said, adding that persistence often paves the way to success.

Organisers say the competition has spent the last 15 years nurturing future aviation professionals and pledged to continue investing in young talents as Nigeria seeks a stronger position in the global aerospace industry.
