NSIB Retrieves Key Evidence in Warri-Itakpe Rail Accident Investigation

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, says its investigation into the June 8 train derailment on the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor has reached a significant stage, with critical evidence recovered and key on-site investigations completed.

Speaking on behalf of the Bureau, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, said NSIB investigators, led by Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr., visited the accident scene immediately after the incident, where they documented evidence, examined railway infrastructure and equipment, reviewed operational records, and interviewed relevant personnel.

She said all recovered materials are undergoing detailed analysis as part of efforts to determine the factors that led to the derailment and develop recommendations to improve rail safety across the country.

Mrs. Adebayo-Arowojobe noted that Captain Badeh also met with affected passengers, commiserated with families of the deceased, and visited injured victims receiving treatment, assuring them of the Bureau’s commitment to a thorough and evidence-based investigation.

According to her, the NSIB is working closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, and other relevant agencies, stressing that the investigation is strictly safety-focused and aimed at preventing future occurrences rather than assigning blame.

She added that the Bureau will make its findings and safety recommendations public upon completion of the investigation.
