Hundreds of people in Surulere have benefitted from a free medical and surgical outreach.
The exercise, organised by the Association of Resident Doctors, LUTH chapter in conjunction with the lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency One in the Lagos State Assembly, Mr. Desmond Elliot, witnessed free surgical procedures for over forty of the beneficiaries.
According to the leader of the physicians, Dr Adebayo Awoniyi, the collaboration with the lawmaker and other sponsors was necessary due to the wide gap in the race to attain Universal Health Coverage in that community.
He stated that “People are longing for healthcare, Federal Government need to take it as a matter of urgency to ensure that people access healthcare through Universal health insurance, so they don’t have to pay to get quality attention”
In a remark, the lawmaker, Mr. Desmond Elliot, pointed out that the gesture, which had become a yearly event, was geared towards meeting the people’s yearning for quality healthcare at little or no cost.
“We need in our budget to create more for healthcare, the only responsibility of government is provision of sociak welfare and protection of the citizens, once you have done that, it is assumed that you have done well. This is just my little contribution” he added
Some of the beneficiaries lauded the effort of the organisers and called on other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate such a humane act.
One of them, Mrs. Olabisi Daniel said ” I actually came for eye screening, and I was well attended to, I also got a reading glasses, we thank the organisers for the gesture”
The exercise held around the Gbaja area of Surulere catered for those with health conditions such as eye defects, diabetes, prostate, breast and cervical cancer.
