The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the roofs of all newly constructed airport terminals must be fitted with solar panels to power parts of the facilities as Nigeria accelerates its transition to greener aviation.
Speaking at the launch of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s Circular Economy Programme in Lagos, Mr. Keyamo said the directive was issued at the design stage of the new airport terminal being built by CCECC.
He insisted that the roof should serve as a solar field to supply electricity for non-aeronautical operations.
The Minister said FAAN’s circular economy initiative aligns with global best practices being championed by the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO and Airports Council International, ACI, as airports worldwide embrace cleaner energy, better waste management and reduced carbon emissions.
According to him, some airports in the United Kingdom have already achieved zero emissions through extensive use of solar power, adding that Nigeria must follow the same path.
Mr. Keyamo also commended FAAN for embracing sustainable airport development, describing the initiative as consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to green energy and environmental sustainability.
