The Lagos State Government has announced a ₦50,000 addition to the May salary of all its workers across cadres as part of activities marking the 2026 Workers’ Day.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, made the announcement during the May Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The governor, while acknowledging the economic challenges faced by workers, urged them to reciprocate the gesture with improved productivity. He also assured that the state government would review the minimum wage soon and address concerns raised by organised labour.
In her address, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, Funmi Sessi, commended the administration for its investments in infrastructure but called for urgent policies to protect workers and promote inclusive growth.
She advocated an increase in the state’s minimum wage from ₦85,000 to ₦250,000 and urged both federal and state governments to strengthen security, noting that no society can thrive amid insecurity.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, praised the resilience of Lagos workers and reiterated the government’s commitment to their welfare as a means of boosting productivity.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Abiodun Aladetan, emphasised workers’ rights to unionise and warned private organisations against intimidating employees over union membership.
He also called on employers yet to implement the minimum wage to do so or face industrial action.
The Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said the state would continue to prioritise training and capacity building to sustain workforce productivity.
The celebration featured a colourful march past by workers, which was inspected by the Deputy Governor, alongside the ceremonial cutting of the May Day cake amid jubilation.
