Lagos Seizes ₦5m Worth of Styrofoam, Arrests 931 in Major Environmental Crackdown

The Lagos State Government has intensified its environmental enforcement campaign, confiscating banned Styrofoam products worth about ₦5 million, arresting 931 offenders and sealing 239 facilities across the state as part of efforts to tackle pollution, enforce sanitation laws and promote a cleaner environment.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Sunday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

Wahab said the state government sustained strict enforcement of the ban on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics through coordinated operations targeting warehouses, shopping malls and distribution outlets across Lagos.

According to him, the enforcement drive led to the seizure of banned products valued at about ₦5 million.

“The ministry continued to enforce the total ban on the distribution, sales and usage of Styrofoam with the confiscation of about ₦5 million worth of banned Styrofoam and single-use plastics from warehouses and malls,” he said.

The commissioner added that the ministry strengthened Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance operations during the review period to ensure adherence to environmental regulations and sanitation standards.

He disclosed that 931 people were apprehended for waste management offences, while 2,251 sites were inspected, 1,711 contravention notices issued and 239 facilities sealed for environmental violations.

Wahab further revealed that over 650 tonnes of construction waste were evacuated from different parts of the state, alongside sustained public sensitisation campaigns on construction, demolition and disaster waste management.

On recycling and waste recovery, the commissioner said the government recorded significant progress through its environmental sustainability initiatives.

According to him, 137,530.94 kilogrammes of PET plastics were removed from the environment in 2025, while recycling collection centres recovered a total of 185,850.72 kilogrammes of recyclable waste within the same period.

He noted that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, also strengthened environmental monitoring through the installation of 114 air quality sensors and the rehabilitation of air pollution abatement facilities across the state.

Wahab added that cleaner fish processing technology was introduced at Ago Egun, Makoko, through the deployment of improved fish kilns designed to reduce smoke emissions, improve air quality and protect the health of local fish processors.

The commissioner stressed that the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remained committed to stricter environmental enforcement, sustainable waste management and the deployment of modern technology to protect public health and create a cleaner Lagos.
