The Lagos State Government says 61.52 per cent of public secondary school students sponsored for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, obtained five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
Alli-Balogun also revealed that the state government committed ₦1.4 billion to sponsor the registration of 45,598 Senior Secondary School III students for the 2026 WASSCE.
According to him, the intervention is aimed at removing financial barriers and improving access to quality education for students across the state.
The commissioner attributed the improved performance to ongoing educational reforms and targeted learning interventions introduced by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He explained that the Eko Learners Support Initiative, launched in January 2025, was designed to bridge learning gaps, improve examination readiness and enhance academic performance in public schools.
Alli-Balogun noted that the state also distributed mathematics and English textbooks, smart learning devices and other instructional materials to schools to strengthen digital learning and classroom teaching.
He disclosed that the ministry established a Teachers Digital Hub to support live-stream teaching sessions across schools and improve access to quality educational content.
On infrastructure development, the commissioner said 15 schools were constructed or rehabilitated in underserved communities, while additional classroom blocks and modular classrooms were provided to reduce overcrowding.
He added that the Tolu School Complex in Ajegunle, comprising 36 schools, had been completed to serve more than 20,000 students.
Alli-Balogun further stated that 223,343 units of ergonomic furniture were distributed to public schools, while seven additional classroom blocks had been approved for the 2026/2027 academic session.
He said the government remained committed to improving access to quality education, strengthening digital learning and enhancing infrastructure across public schools in Lagos State.
