LAWMA Dismisses Compensation Rumour, Says ₦4.34m Paid to Family of Slain Sanitation Worker

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has dismissed as false reports alleging that it failed to compensate the family of late Mrs. Aishat Muhammed, a highway sanitation worker who tragically lost her life in the line of duty on May 7, 2025.

The Authority clarified its position in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, describing the allegation as inaccurate and misleading.

According to the statement, LAWMA’s attention was drawn to a recent publication by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which claimed that the Lagos State Government had not fulfilled its promise to compensate the deceased worker’s family.

“LAWMA wishes to categorically state that this claim is inaccurate and does not reflect the true position of events,” the statement read.

The Authority explained that following the unfortunate incident, it immediately commenced engagement with the family through its operational partner, Highway Managers, the company that directly employed the deceased. After extensive discussions, a mutually agreed compensation package was reached.

“In line with this agreement, a total sum of ₦4,340,000 was paid to the deceased’s son as full and final compensation,” LAWMA stated.

The payment, according to the Authority, covered insurance settlement from the responsible party, burial support, and additional financial assistance, including salary support extended to the family after the incident.
LAWMA stressed that the compensation was duly received and the matter concluded based on the understanding reached with the family.

The Authority expressed deep sorrow over the loss and reiterated its commitment to the welfare, safety, and protection of sanitation workers across Lagos State. It also noted that additional compliance and safety measures have since been strengthened to safeguard its workforce.

LAWMA further urged media organisations to seek proper clarification before publication to ensure accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting.
