NSIB Initiates Probe into Runway Overshoot Incident: Mattini Air Faces Suspension Amidst Safety Audit by NCAA

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an inquiry into a significant incident involving a Challenger 601-3R aircraft bearing Nationality and Registration Marks N580KR, operated by Mattini Air. 

The event occurred at approximately 10:55 am (Local Time) on January 26, 2024.

The aircraft, carrying 12 passengers and three crew members, was in transit from Abuja to Ibadan.

Confirming the incident and giving an update in a statement, the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji says, during the final approach to landing on Runway 22 at Ibadan Airport, the aircraft overshot the runway. 

Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.

She said, NSIB has dispatched a dedicated investigative team (Go Team) to examine the circumstances.

Mrs. Oladeji says, NSIB seeks the collaboration of the public and urges anyone with video clips, pertinent evidence, or information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

“It is essential for the public and the press to respect the privacy of those involved and refrain from speculating on the cause of the incident until the formal report is released”.

The Bureau intends to provide a preliminary report at the earliest opportunity.

In a related development, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority NCAA, has immediately suspended Mattini Airline Services Limited’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight, PNCF following statutory provisions, under Section 32 (4) of the Civil Aviation Act 2022.

According to a statement by the Director, Public and Consumer Protection NCAA, Mr Micheal Achimugu, the suspension remains until compliance with PNCF conditions is confirmed.

Additionally, the NCAA has launched a safety and economic audit for all private jet operations in Nigeria and reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to safety and the promotion of global best practices.
