A Public Affairs commentator, Mr. Dipo Daramola, has explained why he refers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as “Mr. Magic,” describing him as a leader whose achievements are driven by competence, innovation and effective governance rather than political theatrics.
Mr Daramola, in a statement titled “Why I Called Hamzat ‘Mr. Magic’,” said the APC flag bearer has consistently demonstrated an uncommon ability to transform complex challenges into practical and lasting solutions throughout his career in both the public and private sectors.
According to him, Dr. Hamzat’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate reflects decades of preparation, intellectual depth and proven capacity in public service.
He noted that the Deputy Governor’s academic background, which includes degrees from the University of Ibadan and a doctorate from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, underscores his commitment to knowledge, problem-solving and excellence.
The commentator highlighted Hamzat’s record as Commissioner for Science and Technology, where he said technology-driven reforms modernised government operations, improved transparency, automated administrative systems and helped eliminate ghost workers, thereby strengthening governance in Lagos State.
Mr. Daramola also praised Hamzat’s tenure as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, saying he supervised major infrastructure projects that improved transportation, enhanced connectivity and supported economic growth across the state. He added that since becoming Deputy Governor in 2019, Hamzat has remained a dependable and accessible leader known for humility, discipline and a strong commitment to public service.
He further described Hamzat as a leader who prioritises solutions over popularity, saying his style of leadership combines technical expertise, administrative experience, emotional intelligence and strategic foresight. According to Daramola, these qualities are essential for governing a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos.
He argued that Lagos requires visionary leadership capable of addressing challenges such as urbanisation, infrastructure development, technological advancement, environmental sustainability and economic diversification, stressing that Hamzat possesses the experience and competence needed for the task.
Mr Daramola concluded that the nickname “Mr. Magic” is not intended to suggest miracles but to recognise Hamzat’s consistent ability to translate vision into practical policies and measurable development.
He expressed confidence that if Lagos continues to prioritise competence and performance, Hamzat’s leadership could become one of the defining success stories of a new generation.
