The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 10 passengers and injuries to 11 others in a fatal accident that occurred along the Obajana–Lokoja road late Friday night.
According to a statement from the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on October 10, 2025, at Apamaru, near Obajana.
The incident involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, carrying 21 male passengers.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting a wrongful overtaking at high speed.
Ten passengers reportedly died on the spot, while 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries, including deep cuts, fractures, and bruises.
The injured victims were rushed to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the bodies of the deceased were released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and again cautioned motorists against night travels, speeding, and dangerous overtaking — practices he described as leading causes of road crashes in the country.
He urged passengers to be vigilant and speak out against drivers engaging in reckless behaviour.
According to him, “Silence in the face of recklessness is complicity in tragedy.”
Mohammed further disclosed that the FRSC would intensify enforcement against overloading and night journeys across major routes nationwide.
He appealed to all road users to uphold safety as a shared responsibility.
The Corps also advised members of the public to report any reckless driver by dialling the FRSC toll-free line 122 or contacting the nearest patrol team or security agency.
