1,200 Children to Undergo Health Screening After Worker Charged with Abuse

Authorities in Melbourne have launched an urgent health alert after 26-year-old childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown was charged with 70 offenses, including child rape and sexual assault involving eight children — some as young as five months.

Brown, who worked at 20 childcare centres across Victoria since 2017, was arrested in May.

His charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between April 2022 and January 2023, primarily at the Creative Gardens Early Learning Centre in Point Cook and another facility in Essendon. In response, about 2,600 families have been contacted, and 1,200 children have been advised to undergo testing for possible infectious diseases due to the nature of the alleged crimes.

Health officials say any infections detected can likely be treated with antibiotics.

Brown had a valid “working with children” clearance and was working as a fill-in staff member at the time of his arrest.

Authorities believe he acted alone.

Victorian Chief Health Officer Christian McGrath said while they cannot confirm Brown’s infection status, screening is a necessary precaution.

A dedicated support website has been set up for affected families.

Premier Jacinta Allan described the allegations as “sickening,” expressing heartbreak and solidarity with impacted families as investigations continue.
