The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture has held a command performance of cultural display including dance and stage drama, to herald the 35th edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) being hosted by the state.
The command performance which was held at the National Institute for Sports, Surulere, venue for the festival showcased drama titled ‘Osusu’, which harped on the need for Nigerians to consciously work towards living together peacefully.
Osusu, in Yoruba language is symbolic and means bunch of brooms that can be difficult to break and was likened to the way Nigerians must remain united.
The performance had the cast render music in different indigenous languages, sensitising Nigerians to jettison greed, pride, nepotism, moral decadence and kidnapping, as well as to embrace unity and peace.
Speaking on the play which also focused on the importance of hardwork, honesty, sincerity and imbibing the nation’s beautiful, unique and rich culture, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the theme for the festival”” Culture and Peaceful Co- existence “” was apt given the recent happenings in the country.
Earlier in a remark the Director General of National Council for Arts and Culture , NCAC, Otumba Olusegun Runsewe noted that there was great need for Nigerians to do everything within their power to ensure the unity of the nation.
Otumba Runsewe commended Lagos State Government for the hospitality so far and the message conveyed in the drama and dance which portrayed the need for peaceful co-existence amongst Nigerians.
Delegates from thirty six states of the federation are participating in the seven days cultural festival tagged ” EKO NAFEST “”taking place at the national stadium Surulere, Lagos from Nov 7-13, 2022.
