Lagos Assembly Asks Gov. Sanwo-Olu to Clamp Down on Manhole Cover Thieves

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on the State Government to regulate the operation of scavengers in the state.

This followed a motion by a member of the House representing Eti Osa Constituency, Mr Gbolahan Yishawu on the activities of scavengers and the stealing of manhole covers on highways.

He said that there were existing laws that only required implementation and that the House should urge the executive to act on the matter to ensure safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Mr Yishawu called on the state government to replace stolen manholes with composite materials to discourage theft.

Speaking in support of the motion, other lawmakers called for the regulation of activities of cart pushers as well as asked community associations to be alive to their responsibility by protecting their immediate environment and raising alarms where necessary.

Before ruling on the motion, the Speaker of the House, Mrs Mojisola Meranda called for more sensitization on waste sorting to discourage scavenging, while calling on waste collectors to ensure prompt and proper waste disposal.
