The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has taken steps to enhance aviation security, introducing a certification program for screeners, and has also set an October deadline for compliance with new aviation cybersecurity regulations.
The Director General, civil aviation, captain Chris Najomo at a security symposium in Lagos, said, this became necessary as this critical sector is faced with increasingly evolving threats, including cyber attacks, terrorism, insider threats, and unmanned aerial systems.
Speaking on the theme of the symposium: “Fundamentality of Aviation Security in Achieving the Safe- Skies Goal”, the DGCA asserted that the ever-evolving threat landscape necessitates the robust implementation of effective aviation security countermeasures, which are naturally linked to the competence and diligence of the personnel responsible for their execution.
Drawing upon his own experience as an aviator, he championed the principle of continuous and comprehensive training.
Captain Najomo, stressed the need for unwavering vigilance in identifying and neutralizing potential threats, reiterated that a proactive approach is paramount.
He advocated the strategic integration of advanced technologies, such as biometrics, artificial intelligence, and robust cybersecurity measures, to enhance both security and operational efficiency.
According to him, adherence to international standards and national regulations is non-negotiable to ensure the consistent and effective application of security protocols.
“We must remain vigilant and proactive in Identifying and mitigating potential threats to civil aviation”.
Permanent secretary, Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace development Dr. Ibrahim Kana said, collaboration among all stakeholders is equally crucial, as seamless information sharing and coordinated responses are essential in preventing and mitigating security breaches.
Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku harped on fostering security consciousness, encouraging collaboration among industry players, and strengthening aviation governance in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 17 standards.
“Our commitment to reinforcing aviation security must be steadfast and adaptive in an era marked by evolving threats and rapid technological advancements”.
Others stakeholders and representative of the MMA2, Mrs Monica Oguta and Managing Director of an aviation security firm, Mrs. Nkechi Oyenso pledged their unwavering support and continued partnership in building an aviation sector that is secured, sustainable and future- ready.
The symposium brought together airline, airport operators, regulatory, security agencies in the Aviation ecosystem and other stakeholders to discuss, develop actionable solutions to bolster security across Nigeria’s airports.
