Sanwo-Olu Announces Arrival of New Train Sets for Lagos Blue Line, Promises Extension to Okokomaiko by 2026

In a major boost for public transportation in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the arrival of three brand-new train sets—a total of 12 coaches—for the Lagos Blue Line Rail, promising shorter wait times and more comfortable commutes for residents.

The governor shared the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, describing the development as another significant stride in the State’s ongoing efforts to improve mass transit and reduce the daily stress of commuting.

“This means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone using the Blue Line,” Governor Sanwo-Olu wrote. “It’s a step forward in our efforts to make daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable.”

The Blue Line, which began operations in 2023, currently runs from Marina to Mile 2. The governor reaffirmed that work is ongoing to extend the line to Okokomaiko, with a 2026 completion target. The extension is expected to further ease traffic congestion along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and connect more communities to the city’s growing rail network.

“We’re not stopping here,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “I know it’s been a long time coming, but I truly believe we’re building something that will change how we move around this city for the better.”

The new train sets are expected to be deployed soon, as part of efforts to increase frequency, reduce overcrowding, and make the Blue Line a more dependable option for thousands of daily commuters.

With the announcement, Lagos continues to demonstrate its commitment to upgrading public infrastructure under the THEMES++ development agenda, which includes improved transport systems as a key pillar.

As the Blue Line expands westward and additional train sets enter service, residents are hopeful that the long-awaited rail transformation is finally taking shape.
