Suspected Gunmen Kill One, Burn Houses in Kwara Community

Suspected gunmen believed to be members of the ‘Mahmuda’ group have attacked Karongi town in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and setting several houses ablaze.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community in the early hours of Monday, June 9, 2025, taking advantage of the absence of local vigilante members—some of whom were said to be attending a training workshop, while others had travelled for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the gunmen operated freely from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., before they were eventually repelled by a joint team of soldiers and vigilante operatives mobilized from nearby settlements.

Speaking on the incident, the Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Umoru Sariki, confirmed via telephone that one person was killed and multiple houses were razed during the attack.

While the Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejinre-Adeyemi, said she was yet to be briefed.
