A Chief Correctional Assistant with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abdullahi Nura, attempted to take his own life by jumping into Gusau Dam in Zamfara State early Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
The incident was confirmed in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Abubakar.
According to the statement, Nura reported for duty at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Gusau, before hiring a commercial motorcyclist to the dam — the largest and deepest in the area — where he suddenly jumped in.
The motorcyclist immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby security personnel who rescued Nura from the water.
At the time of the incident, Nura was reportedly dressed in his service uniform and carried his official ID card.
The NCoS headquarters in the state was notified immediately.
The State Controller of Corrections, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a team that took Nura to the custodial centre’s medical clinic in Gusau.
He is currently receiving treatment and has regained consciousness.
The reasons for the suicide attempt remain unknown.
