President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and securing the nation, highlighting efforts to ensure every citizen has equal access to political participation.
Speaking at the National Assembly during a joint session of lawmakers to mark the June 12 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, President Tinubu paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari for officially recognising June 12 as Democracy Day and posthumously acknowledging Chief Moshood Abiola and Babagana Kingibe as the rightful winners of the 1993 presidential election.
“Since 1999, democracy has risen from the ashes of military rule. Yet, we still have a long way to go,” Tinubu said. “I affirm my resolve before God and the people to safeguard and build our democracy as the Divine hand intends for us to do.”
He noted that national security remains central to peace and development, citing enhanced intelligence coordination and inter-agency cooperation. Tinubu said his administration is investing in technology and training to reclaim communities from terrorists and criminals.
The President also praised the armed forces for their dedication and sacrifice.
“Their bravery and selfless service should inspire us all. They deserve our gratitude, continued support, and recognition,” he said.
He called on citizens to stay united and committed to national development, emphasising that democratic progress is a collective responsibility.
“Our achievements are not the work of one man. We must work harder to translate economic gains into real improvements in people’s lives. Nigeria can and will rise again.”
This year’s Democracy Day theme is: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
