Aviation Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike Over NAMA Unimplemented Salary Adjustments

Workers of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) may soon down tools, following mounting frustration over the prolonged delay in the implementation of a negotiated salary adjustment.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, four major aviation unions, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) have announced a seven-day notice of withdrawal of services.

The unions decried what they described as a precarious situation faced by NAMA staff, whose pay has not been reviewed in line with the national minimum wage and other agreed adjustments.

The statement signed by the general secretaries of the unions say, despite the conclusion of a salary negotiation with the NAMA management over eight months ago, the outcome, they said, remains unimplemented.

They added that their members, including various professional associations within NAMA, have repeatedly expressed their discontent in writing, with no positive response from the authorities responsible for final approval.

According to the unions, the warning strike notice follows earlier ultimatums issued by their branches and subsequently endorsed by the national leaderships.

The statement read, “If the situation remains unchanged after seven days, a full-scale withdrawal of services by all NAMA workers nationwide will commence”.

The unions have advised all users of NAMA services and the general public to take note of the potential disruption.

“To be forewarned is to be forearmed.”
