Renowned human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has expressed deep concern over the growing influence of criminals and touts in Nigeria’s political space, warning that the country’s democratic values are being eroded by self-serving leaders.
Speaking as a panelist at the 2025 National Conference of Egbe Amofin Oodua in Abeokuta, themed “Regional Justice, Security and Sustainable Development”, Falana lamented the state of governance in the South-West, accusing many political leaders of failing to prioritize the needs of the people.
According to the Senior Advocate, “Politics in the days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo was driven by intellect and service. Today, it’s dominated by criminals and touts who have no interest in economic development or citizen welfare.”
Falana took particular issue with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s plan to renovate the Government House at a cost of N63 billion. He described the move as “reckless and insensitive,” especially in a region battling poverty, infrastructural decay, and a failing education system.
“In a state where people struggle daily to access basic amenities, how do you justify spending N63 billion to refurbish a building that the governor doesn’t even live in? That money could fix roads, power communities, and support public schools,” he said.
He also criticised the Lagos State House of Assembly over plans to spend another N20 billion on official vehicles, just four years after reportedly spending N45 billion on the same.
Falana did not hold back in addressing the surge in street gangs across the region, warning that “Area boys and touts now control entire communities from Lagos to Abeokuta.” He blamed worsening poverty and failed leadership for the breakdown in law and order.
Turning to education, Falana bemoaned the declining performance of South-West states in national examinations. “Two years ago, Ekiti ranked 28th in WAEC results. Last year, Oyo and Osun were also near the bottom. Meanwhile, our children are turning to miracle centres, and public schools are in shambles.”
He urged legal professionals to rise to the occasion by holding political leaders accountable.
“As lawyers, we must go beyond rhetoric. For example, lawmakers inserted 11,000 constituency projects worth N6.9 trillion into the 2025 budget. Ask where these projects are. If answers are not satisfactory, drag them to court.”
Also speaking at the event, former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Akin Olujinmi (SAN), called on legal practitioners to uphold the rule of law and champion the cause of justice, equity, and good governance in the region.
The event featured several other legal luminaries, including Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN), Mrs. Titilayo Akinlawon (SAN), Chief Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN), and Mr. Kayode Akinremi, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abeokuta branch.
