Lagos Assembly Advances Bill for New University of Medicine

A bill to establish the Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences has scaled second reading on the floor of the State Assembly.

The lawmakers debated on the bill, after it was read by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko.Investigation by Radio One revealed that the proposed university would establish Centres for Research and Development, to drive innovation and strengthen its academic and professional functions.

A member of the House, Mr. Nureni Akinsanya stated that the proposed University would create job opportunities and help the state produce more doctors.

Also contributing, Mr. Femi Saheed stressed that the establishment of the university would help bridge the manpower gap, enhance research, and serve as a revenue-generating institution.

Our assembly correspondent reports that the Speaker, Chief Mudashiru Obasa subsequently committed the bill to the joint committees on Health and Education, with a directive to report back within three weeks.
