A members of Lagos State Assembly have commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving August twentieth, as the official date for the annual celebration of Isese Day.
The lawmakers also implored the Governor, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to allocate resources for the sustenance of ISESE Day, with a charge on the Ministry of Information, Strategy and Security to ensure adequate public awareness.
Moving the motion on the Floor of the House, Member representing Badagry Constituency two, Mr. Solomon Bonu, described “Isese” as a cultural and religious festival, that recognizes and preserves the Yoruba heritage, while also fostering unity and cultural tourism.
Another member, Mr. Kehinde Joseph representing Alimosho constituency two stressed the importance of involving children and youths in activities of the day, to ensure continuity, in the face of modernization and globalization.
Other legislators who spoke on the motion, urged the state government to mandate Local Governments and Council Development Areas to facilitate the commemoration of the day with community-based events and provide necessary support, particularly in the areas of security, logistics, and mobilization.
In adopting the motion as a resolution, the House cited Section thirty-eight of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right of every person to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.
Speaker of the assembly, Chief Mudashiru Obasa, who congratulated traditional religion practitioners, leaders, and cultural custodians on the successful celebration of this year’s ISESE Day, also assured them of the Assembly’s continuous support for the preservation of the Yoruba heritage.
