Lagos Speaker Obasa Tasks Local Government Leaders on Grassroots Development

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Chief Mudashiru Obasa, has urged chairmen of the 20 Local Governments (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to focus on service delivery and ensure residents benefit from the dividends of democracy.

Speaking at the 2025 Local Government and Council Development Area Leadership Summit in Ikeja, Obasa warned against repeating past mistakes where council officials neglected their responsibilities.

He reminded the leaders that their mandate comes from the people, urging them to be accountable and impactful.

Obasa stressed the need for collaboration between council chairmen and councillors, respect for community development associations (CDAs) and committees (CDCs), and the creation of functional council chambers.

He also called for initiatives in poverty alleviation, healthcare, infrastructure, recreation centres, and youth engagement to restore public trust.

“Use government money to do good things for the people. Ensure you have parks, sports centres, and programmes that directly impact lives,” Obasa said, adding that visible projects and community interaction were crucial for voter confidence.

In response, Hon. Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and leader of Conference 57, pledged that council chairmen would work with stakeholders and councillors to entrench grassroots development and improve local governance.
