The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has raised concern over the increasing theft of manhole covers across the state, describing the act as a dangerous trend that threatens lives and public safety.
Special Adviser, Office of Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, made the call on Sunday during an inspection of ongoing maintenance on Mobalaji Bank Anthony Way.
He explained that the LSPWC had recently fixed a gaping hole using reinforced concrete slabs on metal cleats but noted that vandals frequently return to remove newly installed covers.
According to him, the persistent theft of manhole covers poses serious health, safety, and security risks, as unsuspecting road users often fall into the open holes and sustain injuries.
He described the perpetrators as “enemies of safety” who place personal economic gains above human lives.
This is why we have continually called on Lagosians to take ownership of public infrastructure.
It makes no sense for road maintenance teams to revisit the same spots repeatedly because of the destructive actions of a few individuals,” Daramola said.Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also directed security agencies to intensify their clampdown on vandals, whom he described as criminals and enemies of the state.
In line with the state government’s commitment to road safety, LSPWC has created a structured approach to replace damaged manholes across Lagos.
The General Manager, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, disclosed that over 4,000 manhole covers have been vandalized and stolen across the state’s 57 local councils.
He added that within the last two weeks, the Corporation has reinstated more than 300 stolen covers in Lagos Island, Surulere, Eti Osa, and Ikeja, with more scheduled for replacement in coming weeks.
Despite exploring the use of alternative materials with no resale value, Ajanaku noted that the theft continues.
He therefore urged residents to join hands with the government in the fight against vandals and safeguard public infrastructure.
